Eureka and trees are closely tied. Eureka started as a logging town and was the Christmas tree capital of the country during the 1920s. The industry lasted through the 1990s. "There was a lot of pride" in Eureka trees, Flanagan says, but the future is uncertain, given that the lumber and Christmas tree industries aren't coming back. "I think Eureka is going to kind of float around," Flanagan says.
